Now get connected to online, when you are on a Train, Indian Railway Ministry has launched free Wi-Fi- facility as a pilot project on Delhi – Howrah Rajdhani Express (train no. 12302). The service was launched by Shri Pawan Kumar Bansal, Indian Railway Minister in Delhi on Tuesday and will facilitate Train passengers to browse web, watch videos on Youtube, listen to streaming music, check emails or chat.

Wi-Fi Facility by Indian Railway unveiled in Howrah Rajdhani Express Train

The Wi-Fi facility is currently offered free of cost to the traveling passengers, until Railway finds out a feasible solution to charge the passengers. The service cost Indian Railway around Rs. 6.30 crore which covers all the three rakes of Howrah Rajdhani Express. Indian Railway is using state of art technology to provide internet access to a moving train, as the train passes through all type of terrain and weather condition. Indian Railways opt for satellite communication link which is arranged through satellite hub facility, set up by Indian Railway. The satellite antenna is placed in one of the two Power Cars of the rakes and is linked through Wi-Fi radios provided outside of each coach which is further distributed inside the coaches through indoor access point. Passengers can enjoy a shared downloading speed of 4 Mbps and 512 Kbps upload speed with the Wi-Fi facility.

Passengers will be able to register to this service by providing the PNR and other details like mobile number etc. On validation of the data entered by the passengers, as per extant DOT guidelines, the Login ID and Password will be sent through SMS to the registered mobile number, which will remain valid for entire journey. Indian Railway is planning to extend this facility to other Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto express trains progressively by end of this financial year.
