Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 users can now taste the Android 7.0(Nougat) with MIUI 8 OTA or MIUI 9 developer ROM. Xiaomi has already started rolling out the MIUI 8 OTA 8.5.4.0 based on Android 7.0 earlier this week. But if you are eager to try out the new MIUI 9 based on Android 7.0, we can guide you.

MIUI 8 OTA

The latest beta stable build is already out 8.5.4.0, and is about 1.3 GB in size. The update 8.5.4.0.(NCFMIED) has lots of performance optimizations, visual enhancements and dozens of newly added features. However, the update is still beta or nightly and may lack some features which will be released with the stable build. The update has Android security patch level for 1st July 2017. Since the OTA is being rolled out in stages your device may or may not show the update.

How to Update to MIUI 8(8.5.4.0)

  • Go to settings, about the phone, tap on system updates. (Update weighs about 1.3 GB).
  • Once the download is finished, reboot your phone to update.
  • Make sure your phone has above 40 percent charge.
  • An alternative method (risky) is to download the OTA and update manually.
    • For updating manually, copy the file to your phone if downloaded to PC.
    • Go to settings, about the phone, tap on system updates.
    • Tap the three dots on top right corner.
    • Choose the file from the folder or root directory, reboot to update.
  • Do not try to restart the phone during the update process.

How to Update to MIUI 9 Developer ROM

If you are anxious to try out the latest ROM MIUI 9, follow the steps below. MIUI 9 has plenty of new features implemented like the dynamic resource allocation, new themes etc. Please do take caution while following this procedure.

  • Visit Mi.com from PC or Mobile.
  • Select your device and build tab(MTK, Snapdragon etc).
  • Download Developer ROM MIUI 9, only available for Qualcomm Global.
  • Copy to your phone folder if downloaded to PC.
  • Go to settings, about the phone and tap on system updates.
  • Tap the three dots on top right corner and
  • Choose the file from the folder or root directory, reboot to update.
  • Do not try to restart the phone during the update process.

Mi’s Note on Flashing “Please wipe all data in Recovery mode if you want to update to a discontinuous ROM version, or downgrade to an older ROM version using MIUI full ROM pack. If you upgrade from MIUI Stable ROM based on Android M to MIUI Developer ROM based on Android N, please flash it via Fastboot update. Even though Mi is keen in giving updates their MIUI OS has reported some security flaws at the moment. We hope Xiaomi fixes those issues as soon as possible to save the name and keep the pride as the best in the market.
