If you’re after a smartphone that won’t cut out a notch in your display and has an immersive bezel-less screen with all cool futuristic tech inside to power it, then Vivo’s newest flagship android smartphone would be the answer to it. The Chinese mobile vendor has launched it’s latest flagship device, Vivo NEX in India.

What makes the Vivo NEX so unique is its ultra FullView display that’s truly bezel-less (there is still a small chin or bezel at the bottom of the screen). What about the front camera? you get an elevating camera or popup selfie camera. Whenever you need to take a selfie, the camera will just pop out from the top portion of the mobile. In addition to all this, you also get the In-Display Fingerprint scanning or the fingerprint scanner is hidden underneath the display. That’s taking up no extra design space from your phone.

Design, Performance and AI

Vivo NEX got a dazzling design with the front portion entirely dedicated for the FullView display. Whereas the back cover features a blend of colours or the cool gradient colours. The rounded corners along with curved back cover make it a perfect fit in any hands. The mobile flaunts a 6.59-inch Super AMOLED FHD+ (2316 by 1080 pixels) display which has a 91.24 per cent screen-to-body ratio. Under the top of the display, you get the hidden proximity sensor, which is controlled with an independent IC.

Powering the Vivo NEX is a 2.8 GHz Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, which is paired with 8GB of RAM and Adreno 630 GPU. For storing your media contents, the phone packs 128GB of internal storage, which unfortunately can’t be expanded further. For game lovers, the mobile features ‘Auto Gaming Mode’ that can keep your game running in the background even after the screen is locked. There is also a Game Assistant that offers easily accessible shortcuts to various game functions. To tackle the overheating issue during prolonged periods of gameplay, the company has built a special cooling system around the phone.

Vivo NEX design and hardware

Vivo NEX runs on Android Oreo 8.1 based Funtouch OS 4.0. The phone features a dedicated AI button (on the left side of the phone) which can instantly bring up Jovi personal assistant that also works with Google Assistant. It also comes with Google lens support integrated right into the camera app.

Elevating Selfie Camera

As said earlier, the Vivo NEX features a hidden front camera, which only pops out from the top portion when you want to take a selfie. It uses a microstepping motor, an independent driver IC and a precision control algorithm that can elevate the camera in just one second. It features an 8-megapixel Sony INX363 camera sensor with f/2.0 aperture.

Coming to the rear side, the Vivo NEX sports a dual camera setup. The primary camera is a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 lens having f/1.8 large aperture and 4-axis optical image stabilization (OIS). While the secondary camera is a 5-megapixel shooter with f/2.4 aperture. Both the front and rear camera units a backed by AI technology. This includes AI Scene Recognition, AI HDR and a slew of AI Filters to enhance the photos.

Connectivity and Extras

As for connectivity, Vivo NEX comes with dual SIM option that supports dual standby on 4G LTE, 3G and 2G networks. The mobile also supports 4G VoLTE for making that HD voice and video calls. Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC. For biometric security, the phone has an In-display fingerprint scanning along with face unlock option. Fuelling the Vivo NEX is a 4000mAh Li-ion battery which comes with Fast Charging support.

For audiophiles Vivo NEX uses Screen SoundCasting technology, where the sound vibrations are sent through the display, turning it into a speaker. Thus you actually won’t find any speaker system with visible holes in the device. In addition, the phone uses System in Package technology (SIP) where a single chip encloses both a Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) and a matrix with three operational amplifiers. Thus offering professional Hi-Fi quality sound with dynamic range reaching up to 130dB.
