The Unique Identification Authority of India(UIDAI) has finally launched the Virtual ID(VID) generator for Aadhaar number earlier this week. It generates a 16-digit random number that you can use instead of Aadhaar number for performing Aadhaar based e-KYC or authentication. This means your Aadhaar number is now more private and is hidden behind this Virtual ID number. However, you need the 12-digit Aadhaar number for generating this Virtual ID from UIDAI portals. So let us learn how to generate and use a Virtual ID, and its features.

Generate/Retrieve Aadhaar Virtual ID

UIDAI will be providing different means to generate or retrieve your VID in the coming days. These will include UIDAI’s resident portal, eAadhaar, Aadhaar Enrolment Center, mAadhaar mobile application etc. However, currently, you can generate or retrieve the VID only from the UIDAI’s resident portal.

UIDAI Launches Virtual ID For Aadhaar - How To Generate Your VID

You can generate multiple Virtual IDs for your Aadhaar from the resident portal. However, you need to wait for a day to generate a different Virtual ID. For generating a Virtual ID, you also need an Aadhaar registered mobile number in which you receive the Aadhaar authentication OTPs.

Steps To Generate Virtual ID
  1. Visit [resident.uidai.gov.in/vid] UIDAI’s official resident portal.
  2. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and security code or captcha.
  3. Click Send OTP, you’ll receive it in your Aadhar registered mobile number.
  4. Enter the OTP received, Choose Generate VID and click Submit.
  5. Your 16-digit VID number will be generated and sent to the registered mobile.

The Virtual ID you just generated has no expiry and is valid until the time you generate a new one. However, if you choose to generate the Virtual ID again on the same day, you’ll get the same 16-digit number. You can use the retrieve option to get the recently generated Virtual ID instead.

Steps To Retrieve Virtual ID
  1. Visit UIDAI’s official resident portal.
  2. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and security code or captcha.
  3. Tap Send OTP, you’ll receive it in your Aadhar registered mobile number.
  4. Enter the OTP received, Choose Retrieve VID and click Submit.
  5. Your recently generated 16-digit VID number will be sent to the registered mobile.
How To Use the Virtual ID

Now that you have generated your Virtual ID you should know where to use it. According to UIDAI, ‘VID can be used in lieu of Aadhaar number whenever authentication or e-KYC services are performed’. However, the AUA/KUA entities needs the updated Aadhaar authentication application for accepting VID as input for authentication. The current deadline set for all agencies to fully migrate to the new systems is 1st June  2018. If any entity rejects your Virtual ID post the deadline, you can raise a complaint with UIDAI.

Features Of Virtual ID(VID)

You might have already learned some of the features of Aadhaar Virtual ID from the first part of this article. However, we are highlighting some of the important characteristics below.

  • Only the Aadhaar card holder can generate the Virtual ID.
  • No entity can extract your Aadhaar number from VID.
  • A Virtual ID is temporary, revocable and random.
  • It has no expiry and is valid till you generate a new VID.
  • You can generate multiple VIDs, but only latest one stays active.
  • Unlike Aadhaar storing VID has no value since it is random.
  • UIDAI also restricts agencies from storing your VID.
  • You can learn more from the FAQs at UIDAI.
Conclusion

UIDAI has been working on the Virtual ID concept for the past several months following a push from non-governmental technology research groups. However, it is interesting to note that the launch happened at a time when Aadhaar system is facing the Supreme Court’s scrutiny. Moreover, they have been following a trial and error method in implementing the Aadhaar system right from the beginning, but they keep on assuring that our data is safe, and we ought to believe it. Hope the article was informative, Peace!
