Aadhaar is now more than just an identification number for Indian residents since linking it to other services is becoming mandatory. Unique Identification Authority of India(UIDAI) has started deactivating Aadhaar cards quoting a number of reasons. So even if you have Aadhaar, its features may be inactive and invalid. Learn how to check the validity of your Aadhaar and reactivate it.

Reasons For Aadhaar Deactivation

Aadhaar enrollment started back in 2010-11, and till date, UIDAI has issued about 1.171 billion IDs. However, they have decided to weed out mismatches, invalid or corrupted entries that crawled into the database. This may have occurred due to several reasons like duplicate enrollments, supporting document errors, software or hardware errors, human errors. Cards are also getting deactivated for nonusage in other services for a continuous period of three or more years. An individual’s Aadhaar can be cancelled or deactivated in case multiple Aadhaars were issued, or if discrepancies were found in the biometric data or supporting documents. Quoted in Sections 27 and 28 in Aadhaar (Enrollment and Update) Regulations 2016.

How To Verify Aadhaar Validity

Using the services provided in UIDAI official website, you can verify whether your Aadhaar number is valid or active.

  • Visit UIDAI.gov.in.
  • Enter your Aadhaar number and security code, click verify.
  • For valid cards, you will see a message “Aaadhaar number Exists!”, along with age band, gender, state and linked mobile number if any.
  • For other invalid cards, you will see “Aadhaar number doesn’t Exist!”

But even valid cards may not be active for Aadhaar enabled services, due to discrepancies in biometrics. To confirm this you can try locking/unlocking the biometrics. For this, Aadhaar-mobile link is a must.

  • Visit UIDAI.gov.in.
  • Enter your Aadhaar, security code, followed by OTP.
  • For inactive Aadhaar, you’ll see suspend or so.

Link your mobile and email with Aadhaar for availing other online features. You also need to link Aadhaar with a bank for receiving subsidies and using Aadhaar Enabled Payment System [AEPS].

  • Locate nearest permanent Aadhaar Enrollment centre.

Once updated, you’ll receive the confirmation SMS and new Aadhaar by post. The physical Aadhaar card may take up to one month to reach you, you can also download the e-Aadhaar from UIDAI website or use the m-Aadhaar app. For your safety, keep the biometrics locked until there is a need like E-Verification of SIM, Bank etc.

Until now, about 8 million Aadhaar cards have been deactivated, and the count will go up. It is always a good idea to present the right documents in person, in case they need biometric re-verification. Once you receive it, link it with any financial (Bank) or nonfinancial services (DigiLocker) to keep it active. Hope you enjoyed the article, Peace!
