Micromax has launched yet another new device in a matter of months. The Funbook Ultra P580 is the second tablet released by the Indian manufacturer and we got our hands on this device. What do we think of it? Let’s find out.

Design

Unlike mobile phones, most manufacturers seem to have unilaterally agreed upon a general design framework for tablets. The Funbook P580’s 7.8 inch display is surrounded by a very thin bezel. While this means the overall size of the tablet is reduced, it’s actually great as it reduces unnecessary weight and is quite comfortable to carry. Also, we like the fact that the tablet’s back side isn’t a fingerprint magnet and its overall, a comfortable device to hold in your hands.

Micromax Funbook Ultra HD P580 Tablet with 7.8inch display, 1.2 GHz Processor, 3G+WiFi [Review]

The 7.8 inch (19.9cm) multi-touch IPS screen has a resolution of 1280 X 768 pixels. What that means is that this is one awesome display. The clarity and sharpness of images and videos is amazing. We were really impressed with the display. While it isn’t an anti-reflect display, it does a good job when used in daylight. It does play 720 HD videos and while these do look good, an upgrade to Full HD would be awesome.

Technical Features

The heart of the Micromax Funbook Ultra P580 is a 1.2GHz Quad Core processor coupled with 1GB of RAM. These are good enough and have enough power for most users. Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean is standard and we’re Android fans, so we’ve got nothing to dislike so far. The 8GB on-board storage isn’t enough and thankfully, the expandable memory (up to 32 GB) works wonders. One really cool feature we liked is that this is not only a data-enabled tablet, but also a voice enabled one. We liked this and it’s a very unique thing for a tablet to have.

The battery on the Funbook Ultra is a 3600mAh one and this ensures that the device can play videos or stream music for up to 10 hours. As picky reviewers, we appreciate manufacturers who listen to our reviews and our opinions. We said last time that Micromax needs to improve battery life and how they have!

If you want the best camera on a mobile device, most tablets aren’t really going to satisfy that urge. That being said, the 5MP camera on the Funbook is quite good. Sure, there’s no flash or autofocus but the overall quality of pictures is quite good. The image sharpness we found left a lot of be desired but then again, this is not a camera for the photography buffs. It also captures HD videos and the sound capture during the video is also acceptable.

Performance

We put the Micromax Funbook Ultra P580 through its paces and after a thorough evaluation we have found that this is one awesome tablet. Right from the clarity and depth of the display to the overall design, a lot of thought has been put into every aspect of the tablet’s construction. The performance is quite good. We liked watching movies, TV shows and surfing the web. However, it isn’t really suited for absolutely high intensity gaming or similar such activities. At the end of the day though, you’re getting phenomenal bang for buck with this tablet.

Verdict

‘Value for Money’ – this sums up the Micromax Funbook Ultra P580. There are some really cool features and for most users, this is a great buy.
