Very soon we could get a hold of a better, feature-rich, usable and still affordable (maybe Zero priced) 4G VoLTE supported mobile from Reliance Jio. Thanks to chipset giant MediaTek for its affordable range of newest chipsets and Google for its Android Oreo (Go edition) OS for making this a reality.
MediaTek has now more openly confirmed that it’s in talks with Indian telco Reliance Jio and Google to bring Android Oreo (Go edition) smartphones in India. These entry-level 4G VoLTE capable smartphones would help these companies to win India’s next billion users.
Those who are hearing Android Oreo (Go edition) OS then it’s a lighter version of Google’s mainstream Android Oreo operating system. It’s been built especially for low-end devices with lower storage space, RAM capacity and processing power. It works on phones having 512MB to 1GB of RAM. The super optimised OS also packs heavily optimised Google app suite called “Go” apps, such as Google Go, Google Assistant Go, YouTube Go, Google Maps Go etc. You could also download more mobile apps specially optimised for Android Go smartphones from the dedicated section in Google Play store.
MediaTek’s MT6739 and MT6737 chipsets already have support packages available to run Android Oreo (Go edition) for mobile vendors to build upon. These chipsets can support up to a 13-megapixel camera at the rear and an 8-megapixel selfie front camera. They also support FullView 18:9 display with HD+ resolution (1440 x 720 pixels) and rear dual camera setup. Other prominent features include dual VoLTE (on both SIM) and face unlock. Connective wise these chipsets support 4G LTE that can work with any Indian telcos 4G band. In addition, you also get WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS support.
MediaTek says the upcoming Android Go devices will come in either 512MB RAM and 4GB storage combination or 1GB RAM and 8GB storage combination. The company is currently working with Indian mobile vendors Micromax, Lava, Karbonn and other for Android Oreo (Go edition) devices.
