The new year has started well for Reliance Jio, as its wired fiber broadband service JioFiber has topped in Netflix ISP Speed Index. According to the latest data published by the company in January 2020, JioFiber topped the speed chart with an average streaming speed of 3.63 Mbps for Netflix videos. Thus becoming the fastest broadband operator in India, beating out airtel and Spectra.

Do note that JioFiber actually offers its broadband service at a minimum speed of 100 Mbps. But it seems the ISP provider can only achieve a streaming speed of 3.63 Mbps. We could hope the speed to improve in the coming days, as the ISP could fully leverage its extensive full-fibre network across India.

Coming back to Netflix ISP Speed Index, 7 Star Digital becomes the second-best ISP provider with an average speed of 3.62 Mbps. It seems the ISP provider would catchup with (even dethrone) JioFiber in the near future as the speed difference between the two is just 0.01 Mbps. Taking the third spot is Spectra with its average speed of 3.50 Mbps. Airtel is keeping up its fourth position with an average speed of 3.48 Mbps. They’re followed by You Broadband (a subsidiary of Vodafone Idea Limited) with an average speed of 3.41 Mbps.

Tata Communications sits at the bottom of the chart with an average speed of 1.88 Mbps. India’s largest wired broadband provider BSNL is in a better position at 14th with an average speed of 2.50 Mbps.

Netflix India ISP Speed Index January 2020

So what’s Netflix ISP Speed Index? It a list of average prime-time bitrate for Netflix content streamed to Netflix users during a particular month. The prime time here been calculated by the average bitrate of Netflix content in megabits per second (Mbps) streamed by Netflix users per ISP. Do note that speed indicated in the Speed Index is not a measure of the maximum capacity of an ISP. It only a calculation of speed in streaming Netflix content via the ISP.

If you are looking to test your ISP streaming speed, Netflix has its own dedicated internet speed testing website called Fast. Using this you could find your ISPs video streaming (download and upload) speed in real-time.
