Supporting government’s effort to push cashless transactions, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has started giving free travel insurance to passengers who booked train tickets through its online platform. Starting 10th December 2016, you will get a free accident insurance cover of up to Rs 10 lakh on booking train tickets at IRCTC.

Do note that train tickets booked from railway stations will not get the benefits of the free travel insurance scheme. You need to book train tickets through IRCTC online portal [irctc.co.in] to avail the free travel insurance scheme.

IRCTC now offers free Travel Insurance for Train ticket booking

How can you avail the free travel insurance? there isn’t much you need to do to avail the free travel insurance. While booking a train ticket, the option to choose travel insurance will be pre-select by default. The travel insurance scheme is available to passengers on booking train tickets for all reserved classes like SL, 1AC, 2AC, 3AC, CC etc. It’s also available in all trains except passenger trains and suburban trains. Both confirmed train tickets and RAC (Reserved Against Cancellation) tickets will be fully covered under this insurance scheme.

Under the free travel insurance scheme, passengers will be entitled to get Rs 10 lakh in case of death, Rs 10 lakh in case of permanent disability and Rs 7.5 lakh in case partial disability. You will also be entitled to get Rs 2 lakh for hospital expenses in case of injury from train accidents and Rs 10,000 for transportation of the mortal remains.

  • Up to ten lakh insurance cover per passenger.
  • Available on all train ticket booking on reserved classes like SL, 1AC, 2AC, 3AC, CC etc.
  • Available on all trains except passenger trains and suburban trains.
  • Passengers with confirmed and RAC tickets are covered.

The optional travel insurance scheme was first launched as a pilot phase for one year period on 1st September 2016. Under that scheme users booking train tickets on IRCTC can opt for travel insurance. This travel insurance scheme would cover of up to Rs 10 lakh by paying a premium of just 92 paise.
