Finally, it’s here Flipkart’s own digital music downloads store Flyte now live, an iTunes of India for music. Flipkart now hold the largest collection of music spread across various genres including movie songs, Film/OST, devotional and spiritual, Hindustani, Carnatic, Pop, Rock, Indipop and others Indian languages. Recently only Flipkart had acquired Mime360 a Mumbai-based digital content platform company which manages music streaming for popular Indian labels like Saregama, Universal Music and Inreco and also delivers music content to publishers like Gaana, Myusic and iMusti. It was clear that, Flipkart was eying on digital music store.
The Flipkart Flyte is offering DRM free music tracks with pricing starting as low as Rs 6 for single track with multi device playback support in various bit rates including 64kbps, 128kbps and 320kbps. It seems most of the new songs are priced at around Rs 10-15 which could put consumers off a bit. Music purchased can only be downloaded 3 times, including the initial purchase. After that you will not be able to re-download the music from Flyte, one of the bad side as far as i see with this new music store. Users can listen to the 30 seconds clip of any song for free before purchasing. Users can purchase digital mp3 music from Flipkart.com using any of the standard payment options available on the website, including credit cards, debit cards, Internet banking or Gift voucher etc. Additionally, there is an option to use Flipkart wallet service to pay for digital music purchases.

- Flyte Download Manager – Flipkart has also provided a custom Flyte download manager to download purchased songs in bulk and enjoy greater control over the downloads. It’s available for Windows, Mac and Linux running devices. Initially after purchase users will get a .fkdm file which can only be opened in the Flyte download manager and when opened it will begin downloading tracks directly to your device.
- DRM free Mp3 format– All digital music downloads are available in DRM-free MP3 format. 99% of songs available on Flipkart digital music store are available in CD-quality (320kbps bitrate). By default the songs download are encoded in 128kbps. However users could choose to download songs at 320kbps or 64kbps bitrates at the time of download from Library. The mp3 file size will be approximate 5 min song at 320 kbps will be 12 MB, 128 kbps will be 5 MB and at 64 kbps will be 3 MB.
- Labels – Flipkart has successfully made deals with all major music labels like T-Series, Saregama, Universal Music India Pvt Ltd, Sony Music International, Sony Music India, Divine Arts Ishq Records, Hi Tech Music Ltd, Times Music, Big Eye Music, Air Music, Emm Entertainment, Tips Industries Ltd. They have also brought regional labels like Symphony, Sruthilaya, Kosmik Global,Saregama which are providing music from Malayalam, Tamil, Punjabi etc.
From initial usage of Flipkart Flyte it seems it has got a decent collection of Indian songs, but still missing many major regional labels. The pricing seems to be a competitive, as single track cost as low as Rs 6 and goes up to Rs 15. There is a rating system for all songs, just like the products, users can rate each song or the full album. If it can bring all major regional labels and also international labels too, then definitely it will become an instant hit.
We can hope Flipkart will soon enrich its music store with all major labels, thus becoming the true iTune store of India.
