Seems the government owned telecom operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is back on the growth track with its competitive voice and data STVs.

According to the latest telecom subscription data published by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), as on 30th April 2016, BSNL has added around 11,39,541 wireless subscribers to its network beating out all the private telecom operators in the country. Second to the race is India’s top telecom operator Bharti Airtel with its 9,76,230 new subscriber addition followed by Aircel.

BSNL adds most Mobile subscribers during April 2016 (TRAI)

Here some interesting data from Telephone Subscription data (as on 30th April 2016) by TRAI –

  • India got 1034.25 million wireless or mobile (GSM, CDMA & FWP) subscribers, an increase of 0.06% from previous month.
  • In the telecom sector, private telecom operators hold 91.20% market share, whereas Govt owned telecom operator BSNL & MTNL jointly hold only 8.80% market share.
  • Bharti Airtel holds the top position in Indian telecom market with 24.39% share, followed by Vodafone India with 19.14% share and Idea cellular with 16.89% market share.
  • Videocon loses almost all of its mobile subscribers, as it recently sold its spectrum to Airtel.
  • Mobile Number Portability (MNP) request increased from 209.13 million at the end of March 2016 to 214.04 million at the end of April 2016. Thus a total of 4.91 million subscribers submitted their requests for MNP.
  • Wireline subscriber base declined to 25.04 million at the end of April 2016 with BSNL and MTNL losing the most.
  • Top five wired broadband service providers are BSNL with 9.91 million subscribers followed by Bharti Airtel, MTNL, Beam Telecom and YOU Broadband.
  • Top five Wireless broadband service providers are Bharti Airtel with 37.37 million subscribers followed by Vodafone, Idea Cellular, Reliance Communications and BSNL
