The state-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has switched gears in its 4G deployment across India. The telecom operator has signed a network modernisation agreement with Finnish telecom gear maker Nokia to launched 4G and Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services in ten telecom circles across India.
Under the agreement, Nokia will help BSNL to deploy its 4G LTE and VoLTE services in western and southern regions of India. The telecom circles which are covered under the deal include Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Telangana. These are the telcos most profitable telecom circles and will serve nearly 38 million subscribers.
Nokia will deploy its Single Radio Access Network (RAN) software which will simplify network installation. Thus allowing BSNL to save operational costs while supporting 2G, 3G and 4G subscribers in a single radio unit. With BSNL VoLTE service in place, subscribers can experience HD-quality, crystal clear voice calls and faster call connection.

Nokia will utilize its global expertise and best practices to ensure high network and service quality. The network deployment will include Nokia Single RAN software, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), Session Border Controller (SBC), CloudBand, Monetization Solution, Performance Manager, IP/MPLS and Wavence microwave technologies.
Back in 2017, BSNL and Nokia have signed a MoU to explore and develop the applications of 5G. Nokia is currently working with BSNL on setting up the foundation for 5G. The company is also creating an experience centre along with research and development centre in Bengaluru to try to discover stakeholder requirements for 5G in India.
