The Swiss Army Knife of media players – VLC is out now for the Android. The VLC team stated about the development of an Android Version in May 2012, prior to this the news was leaked in Softpedia.

The VLC Android app promises to bring in most of the features that has made the desktop version of the universal media player so popular.

  • Support for network streams, including HLS.
  • Supports Android from version 2.1 (platform-7).
  • Supports ARMv6, ARMv7 and ARMv7+NEON.
  • Subtitles support, embedded and external, including ASS and DVD subtitles.
  • Multi audio or subtitles tracks selection.
  • Multi-core decoding, for Cortex-A7 A9 and A15 chips.
  • Experimental hardware decoding.
  • Gestures, headphones control.

The player is still in beta form and is expected to be buggy, also the player “works only with a limited set of hardware,this version is not stable, and is primarily intended for power users and hackers. As VideoLAN puts it, “it might kill your kitten, destroy your house and start the mayan apocalypse.”
