Android Dominant Indian Tablet Market hits 3.11 million unit Sales in 2012 [Report]

Indian tablet market is growing in a rapid phase, according to Cyber Media Research report around 3.11 million tablets where sold in India during 2012 and out of it 1.09 million shipped in the October-December 2012 quarter alone.

Samsung took the top spot, followed by Micromax and Apple to become tablet market leaders, among 72 local and international vendors who shipped tablets in India during the year. Android remain dominant OS among Indian tablet market specially due to its openness and sociability to build tablets in every price tag, followed by Apple’s  iOS and Windows making inroads.

Samsung with its bigger 5 inch Galaxy Note registers the inception of a new segment, ‘Phablets’. The research also counted devices that have a screen bigger than 5-inches as tablets, propelling to Samsung top spot in Indian tablet market. In 2012, ‘Phablets’ constituted around 16.5% of total sales and this trend is expected to strengthen in the coming quarters. Starting from 2013 Cyber Media Research decided to segment the tablets market into two separate segments Phablets (5-inch and above) and Tablets (7-inch and above screen size).

In 7 inch and above tablet market Micromax accounted for 17.07% of the market share, followed by Apple with 10.88% and Samsung with 10.3% during the full 2012 calendar year.

In Q4 (October-December) 2012 India sold 1.09 million units of tablets accounting for 35.33% of the total shipments for the entire year. During that quarter Samsung, Micromax and Karbonn led the tablet market.
