As per the latest telecom subscription data published by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), as on 31st May 2016, the total telephone subscriber base in India declined to 1,058.03 million. That’s a negative monthly growth of – 0.12 percent, pushed by the decline in the urban subscription, whereas rural subscription increased a mere 0.97 million.

When looking on to the wireless subscriber base which includes the common mobile users, the subscriber base has declined to 1,033.16 million at the end of May 2016.

Here some interesting data from Telephone Subscription data (as on 31st May 2016) by TRAI –

  • India got 1,033.16 million wireless or mobile (GSM, CDMA & FWP) subscribers.
  • In the telecom sector, private telecom operators hold 91.11% market share, whereas Govt owned telecom operator BSNL & MTNL jointly hold only 8.80% market share.
  • Bharti Airtel holds the top position in Indian telecom market with 24.62% share, followed by Vodafone India with 19.23% market share and Idea cellular with 16.99% market share.
  • People are still in the process of porting out of Videocon, as it recently sold its spectrum to Airtel.
  • Reliance (RCom) also loses subscribers, mainly due to shutting down of its CDMA network and pushing its users to Reliance 4G.
  • Mobile Number Portability (MNP) request increased from 214.04 million at the end of April 2016 to 219.27 million at the end of May 2016.
  • Wireline subscriber base continues to decline, affecting mainly the government telecom operators BSNL and MTNL.
  • Broadband subscribers increase to 159.79 million.
  • Top five wired broadband service providers are BSNL with 9.89 million subscribers followed by Bharti Airtel, MTNL, Atria Convergence Technologies and YOU Broadband.
  • Top five Wireless broadband service providers are Bharti Airtel with 39.01 million subscribers followed by Vodafone, Idea Cellular, Reliance Communications and BSNL.
